  • Luke Walton reportedly urged Magic Johnson to re-sign Brook Lopez, Julius Randle

Now that the Los Angeles Lakers have all but waved the white flag on the 2018-19 NBA season, placing a minutes restriction on LeBron James and shelving his young teammates, it is no secret that third-year coach Luke Walton is on the hottest seat. We can argue whether Walton is the most deserving target of the Lakers' inability to make the playoffs in the inaugural season of the LeBron James era in Los Angeles, but he is the odds-on favorite to take the fall, since team president Magic Johnson and general manager Rob Pelinka appear less likely to spill on the sword themselves. • LeBron's 33 send Lakers past Davis' Pelicans, 125-119

Anthony Davis' first night in Los Angeles since the trade deadline started with a loud pregame ovation from Lakers fans still hoping he'll wear their team's uniform someday soon. The superstar forward ended it on the New Orleans bench while the Pelicans failed to keep up with another superstar who already made his way to Hollywood last summer. LeBron James capped his 33-point performance with a one-legged, fallaway 3-pointer with 31 seconds to play, and the Lakers weathered strong performances by Davis and Julius Randle for a 125-119 victory on Wednesday night.

Julius Randle had 21 points in his first game back at Staples Center against the Lakers after playing four seasons with them, and Jrue Holiday had 18 points and 10 assists. Davis and James shared the court for the first time since James recently declared in an interview with ESPN that it would be "amazing" if the Lakers traded for the Pelicans' biggest star. New Orleans coach Alvin Gentry said before the game that Davis will not be traded to the Lakers or anywhere else as long as he remains under contract to the Pelicans.

  • Randle may sit out Pelicans' visit to Lakers

During the same whirlwind week last July, when four-time NBA Most Valuable Player LeBron James created a roar by signing with the Los Angeles Lakers, the organization also quietly renounced their rights to Julius Randle, their former lottery pick who was the leading scorer and rebounder last season, and the only player to appear in all 82 games. Randle's return hit a bump in the road when he limped off the floor late in a 102-96 loss against the visiting Miami Heat on Sunday. He then sat out his first game of the season on Wednesday, a 123-115 loss against the Milwaukee Bucks that kicked off a four-game road trip.
