  • Three Things to Know: Will Lakers’ lack of shooting spoil more than LeBron’s debut?

Since the day LeBron took his talents to South Beach the formula has been the same: Surround LeBron with shooters, including bigs so teams can go four out around him, space the floor and let LeBron carve up defenses and find those shooters. Magic Johnson sold LeBron on a different philosophy if he came to Los Angeles — fill the roster with other playmakers. In the Lakers’ first game, the lack of shooting was critical to their 128-119 loss.

  • Trail Blazers know Spurs are still dangerous

The San Antonio Spurs have made the NBA playoffs 21 straight years, though there are some who believe that streak will end this season. "They're tough," Lillard said of the Spurs, who come calling to Moda Center Saturday night to face the Trail Blazers. Lillard scored 28 points to lead the Blazers to a 128-119 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers Thursday night to secure their NBA-record 18th straight win in a regular-season home opener.

  • Butlers' Wolves host Cavs in home opener

Jimmy Butler may get his desire to be traded fulfilled at some point this season and the awkwardness of the situation has created some uncomfortable moments for a team he helped reached the playoffs for the first time since 2004. In the meantime, Butler and the Minnesota Timberwolves will try to get a win in their home opener Friday night with the Cleveland Cavaliers, who are playing their second game following the departure of LeBron James to the Los Angeles Lakers. The saga with Butler began cropping up in July when he rejected a four-year contract extension that would have prevented him from reaching free agency next summer.

  • Lakers must choose between winning now and building for future: Barkley

James, who in July signed a four-year, $154 million contract with the Lakers, joins a roster that includes promising but untested players like 20-year-old Lonzo Ball, 21-year-old Brandon Ingram and 23-year-olds Kyle Kuzma and Josh Hart. Friction between the two groups will hurt team chemistry and hold the Lakers to at best the sixth playoff seed in the Western Conference before they get knocked out in the first round, Barkley told reporters on a conference call.
