  • Report: Dwane Casey sought contract extension from Raptors, which might have pushed them to fire him

Dwane Casey guided the Raptors to a franchise-record 59 wins this season. There are multiple plausible explanations: Toronto stumbled annually in the playoffs, including getting swept by LeBron James and the Cavaliers in the second round the last two years. With key players – Kyle Lowry, DeMar DeRozan, Serge Ibaka and Jonas Valanciunas – locked into expensive multi-year contracts, the Raptors’ best shot at a shakeup was firing the coach.

  • Raptors reserves deliver in clinching win over Wizards

The Toronto Raptors punched their ticket to the second round of the NBA playoffs on Friday with a 102-92 victory over the Washington Wizards. With 24 points from Kyle Lowry and a big contribution from their reserves, the Raptors notched the first road win of their Eastern Conference first-round series to eliminate the Wizards four games to two. DeMar DeRozan added 16 points and Jonas Valanciunas chipped in 14 for Toronto, who trailed by five going into the fourth quarter but out-scored the flagging Wizards 29-14 in the final period.

  • DeRozan scores 37, Raptors win Game 2, beat Wizards 130-111

DeMar DeRozan's big game put the Toronto Raptors in a place they've never been before: up 2-0 in a playoff series. DeRozan matched his career playoff-high with 37 points, Jonas Valanciunas had 19 points and 14 rebounds and the Raptors beat the Washington Wizards 130-119 on Tuesday night as Toronto took a 2-0 lead in a playoff series for the first time in franchise history. "I didn't go out there planning to score 37 points, I went out there to be aggressive," DeRozan said.

  • At least the Raptors avoided a catastrophic slide

DeMar DeRozan and Jonas Valanciunas alone were guaranteed more than $160 million. Other players were also owed enough that Toronto would have only limited means to replace its best player, Kyle Lowry, if he walked in unrestricted free agency – which seemed quite possible. It could have taken the Raptors years to tear down and maybe even longer to build back up.

  • NBA Off-Season Preview: Should The Raptors Keep The Band Together?

While the NBA playoffs are still going, the 2017 offseason is rapidly approaching for many teams with massive decisions to make. Last summer, Toronto retained All-Star shooting guard DeMar DeRozan with a five-year, $139 million contract that appeared to lock in their direction as a franchise for years to come. After all, they had already ponied up to sign DeMarre Carroll and extend Jonas Valanciunas and Terrance Ross in 2015.
