  • Pop: 'Overcoaching' played role in LaMarcus Aldridge's struggles

LOS ANGELES -- San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich revealed Thursday that forward LaMarcus Aldridge requested a trade over the summer, which in turn led to some critical self-examination. Popovich pointed to that candid interaction with Aldridge as somewhat of a catalyst for the two coming to a better understanding before the start of the season. Asked what helped to bring about Aldridge's resurgent 2017-18 campaign, Popovich deadpanned, "When he said, 'I want to be traded.'" "It's as simple as that," Popovich said. "I said, 'Whoa, nobody's ever said that to me before.' It's my 20-whatever year, and nobody's ever said that, like, 'I'm not enjoying this. I'm not confident. I'm not sure you

  • Aldridge, Bertans lead Spurs to comeback win over Kings

Out of sync for most of the first three quarters, the San Antonio Spurs got a big lift from LaMarcus Aldridge down the stretch and an even bigger boost off the bench from Davis Bertans. With star forward Kawhi Leonard sidelined indefinitely by a left shoulder tear, it was the perfect combination to keep San Antonio's three-year winning streak against Sacramento going. Aldridge had 31 points and 12 rebounds, Bertans scored a career-high 28 and the Spurs came back from 13 down in the second half to beat the Kings 107-100 on Monday night.

  • Kawhi Leonard returns Tuesday on minutes restriction

The Spurs have been the Spurs this season, going 19-8 with an elite defense and offense that’s good enough to get them wins, thanks to LaMarcus Aldridge playing at an All-Star level. Starting Tuesday, they add Kawhi Leonard back to the mix. Leonard is one of the five best players in the NBA (and that may be selling him short).

  • Gregg Popovich on LaMarcus Aldridge: “We’d really be lost without him”

While Twitter buzzed with trade possibilities, Aldridge sat down with Gregg Popovich and they talked about how he could be used better — and in ways he was more comfortable — in the Spurs offense. No trade was made, Aldridge returned to Spurs camp this fall. The Spurs knew they were going into the season without Tony Parker, a key part of their depth (and their most reliable pick-and-roll player).
