  • New team, same reality: It's all or nothing for the Cavs

A Q&A with Chris Manning of SB Nation’s Cavaliers site Fear the Sword. What needs to happen for this to be an enjoyable season for Cavaliers fans? The Cavs need to be really, really good again. That's simple to say, but no one rooting for this team will be happy unless Cleveland reaches the finals again, at the very least. Fans also need to see some growth in the team and at least sort of think this team can actually beat the Warriors to win it all this year. Being able to end Kyrie Irving's first season in Boston is also something Cavs fans hope happens. What makes Cavaliers fans most excited about this year? What makes Cavaliers fans most nervous? • 5 bizarre moments from Kyrie Irving's 'First Take' interview

Kyrie Irving had a bizarre summer. Fittingly, on Monday, he appeared on ESPN’s First Take for an equally bizarre interview, one where he actively dodged questions like a dogged politician and seemed to embrace his “villain” role that supposedly been carved out for him after this trade. That sentence doesn’t do it justice. This was absolutely, completely bonkers. Some of Irving’s appearance had to be a legitimate performance art. We’ve already learned that Irving’s Flat Earth debacle might have been a ploy for attention, or perhaps, a dig at the beat reporters who weren’t giving him enough attention. Clearly, the 25-year-old Irving understands how much oxygen he can suck up from the way he presents

  • Cavs' Thomas to miss start of season, maybe much longer

Isaiah Thomas beamed as he held up his new No. 3 Cavs jersey for the first time. Stunned by Boston's decision to trade him to Cleveland as part of a package for Kyrie Irving, Thomas chose not to share much information Thursday about a hip injury that ended his inspirational playoff run last season and will sideline him for the start of this season — and probably a lot longer. At his introductory news conference, Thomas quickly deferred specific questions about his hip to new Cavaliers general manager Koby Altman, who said the team has a rehab plan in place for the All-Star point guard.

  • No pressure: Isaiah Thomas and his bum hip are tied to LeBron's future in Cleveland

Isaiah Thomas’ timetable to return this season remains unclear. Koby Altman is a smart guy. The package the Cleveland Cavaliers general manager got for disgruntled All-Star Kyrie Irving – an All-NBA point guard, albeit a battered one, in Isaiah Thomas, a defensive-minded wing in Jae Crowder, an intriguing big-man prospect in Ante Zizic and a potential top-five pick – was solid, all things considered.
